Understand The Use Of ICT Samples â⬠MyAssignmenthelp.com
Question: Examine about the Understand The Use Of ICT. Answer: Presentation The reason for the report is to comprehend the utilization of ICT in the business situation. In the present day, each business association needs to utilize innovation so as to improve itself and make the item accessible to the clients. This can assist the associations with gaining an upper hand in the market (McDermid, 2015, p.45). The report centers around the use of ICT on a particular association. The organization being referred to is a 5-year-old programming association situated in Melbourne. The association builds up an in-house application and has its market spread over the little and medium estimated businesses in the nation. Be that as it may, there is restricted extension for improvement for the association consequently; the choice of creating web security is a top need. One of the systems created by the organization is the extension of business to have an online nearness. The official supervisors of the association are worried about the sort of business that goes on in the market. The potential customer for the association could be pharmaceutical and friendliness ventures. The worry is more on the monetary factors instead of the social-financial and natural components. The report examinations the ways by which such an association can shield itself from the danger of web security. The use of present day web security is depicted in the report. The goal of the report is to research the ways by which ICT can be utilized so as to increase an upper hand in business. The association is a product organization and subsequently, it is significant for each part to create intense information about the utilization of ICT and its uses in the advanced world. The employments of the application so as to grow the association in the worldwide market are additionally expressed in the report. Moreover, the report likewise gives suggestions dependent on the ways by which the utilization of ICT can be improved by the association. Idea of data and system security System security is alluded to as the activities embraced by an association to forestall any security dangers in the product or PCs. In the cutting edge world, there have been a few occurrences of penetrated security administrations. This happens because of poor enemy of infection and ill-advised observing of the product and PC frameworks. The data and system danger generally happens during the hour of information move. As per Banister Connolly, (2014, p.119), the information move can be as both physical just as electronic. By and large, information moved through electronic media is inclined to security dangers. System security for the most part includes approaches and practices that forestall the danger of unapproved access to the PC framework. The openness is observed and the ways by which these dangers can be forestalled or alleviated are gotten to by the experts accountable for the online security framework. Markus Mentzer, (2014, p.353) expressed that organize security is chiefly utilized for the validation of information. It is a one-factor verification, as it requires a sole variable for the validation of information. After the confirmation, the information is scrambled with a firewall that forestalls the passageway of any dangers in the framework (Stallings Tahiliani, 2014, p.90). In the light of this announcement, it tends to be said that the firewall should be solid and need to can possibly forestall a danger of the product. Without an appropriate firewall, the danger of security can be enormous. In the cutting edge days, the utilization of against infection programming can forestall a danger of assaults. Another enormously significant factor that should be done is the update of the product. Stahl et al., (2013, p.435) expressed that the antedated programming is inclined to dangers from the infections and programmers. With the brisk update of innovation in the cutting edge world, it is important that the product remain refreshed to forestall the sectio n of infections. In such manner, it very well may be said that few applications are built up that forestall the danger of security in the product. Late advancements utilized in data and system security In the present day, the danger of infection and programmers has been a significant worry for businesses. This is on the grounds that loads of significant data is detracted from the associations that can represent an immense open door for the contenders. Not just business, the danger additionally overwhelms the military database that may compromise a nation. Consequently, Stahl et al., (2016, p.55) expressed that advances should be built up that can help in the security of dangers in the association. The absolute latest advancements that are utilized in the security of data and avoidance of security are given. Symantec Advanced Threat Protection Symantec Advanced Threat Protection (SATP) is utilized to reveal, organizing, researching and giving healing measures to cutting edge dangers that happen in an association. This should be possible under a solitary window and can give protection from the danger of any security (Chen Zhang, 2014, p.314). The innovation additionally includes cloud-based sandbox and explosion benefits so as to offer types of assistance identified with cross point control. The perceivability permits clients to look into any security dangers and make amendments dependent on the danger. ProtectWise Cloud Network DVR As indicated by Hall, (2014, p.21), the ProtectWise Cloud Network offers perception, location and reactions to organize security occasions. This incorporates progressed determined dangers, information filtration, etc. The product identifies assaults consequently and forestalls the spread of the assault. The upside of this innovation is that it can identify an assault on any gadget, for example, PCs or cell phones. It doesn't have any breaking point about the window of maintenance for a system. Fireglass Threat Isolation Platform Firewall is one of the pioneers of disconnection innovation. This product can be utilized to fight off malware and phishing dangers from the PC. Al-Saggaf et al., (2015, p.235) expressed that this product makes a hole between the assaults created from the web and the applications. Any danger from the web is blocked quickly so as to forestall dangers of assault. This gives security to the PCs just as different gadgets that recognize potential dangers. Use of these innovations in the association In light of the utilization of this product it tends to be said that the use of these can help in the improvement of any association. On account of the association referenced for the situation study, the utilization of the product can assist it with attaining its goal of differentiating the business. The purpose behind the failure to play out this errand was because of the absence of assets to deal with the sites and customer database. So as to play out this assignment in an effective way, the utilization of the cutting edge advances and programming identified with anticipation of electronic dangers can be used so as to convey the organization in a worldwide setting (Bull, 2015, p.19). For instance, the utilization of Advanced Threat Protection created by Symantec is programming that can distinguish complex assaults to the framework. This can be utilized so as to identify any infection or programmers that may utilize complex programming to take data. As per Ming et al., (2015, p.360) , this framework can be utilized worldwide with an end goal to control the expansion and spread of programmers and infections through different methods for malware. Then again, innovation, for example, ProtectWise Cloud can be utilized to distinguish dangers from any gadgets. In the advanced world, this can end up being an enormous preferred position for an association, as the vast majority will in general utilize the web from different gadgets separated from the PC. Associations looking for a drawn out future in the product business can use this product, as it has a brilliant future in the product business. Chou, (2013, p.79) saw that the utilization of fire glass can likewise be compelling for business. This is on the grounds that the spread of malware in corporate business settings is obstructed by the utilization of fire glass. Fire glass confines the dangers and mitigates it without the information on the association or the framework. This makes a bit of leeway as framework tidy up isn't constantly essential for the associations. In the worldwide setting, this product can help in the advancement of a made sure about web administration all t hrough the world. Points of interest and dangers of the innovations Pieprzyk et al., (2013, p.343) expressed that the advancements utilized have certain favorable circumstances that might be valuable for associations. These points of interest give chances to investigate the advances and execute it for better use later on. Notwithstanding, Hsiao et al., (2014, p.67) expressed that specific dangers are additionally included that may undermine the utilization of these advancements. The points of interest and the dangers that the advancements give can be recorded separately. Symantec Advanced Threat Protection The propelled danger security created by Symantec accommodates the programmed discovery of dangers in a framework. The framework organizes the basic occasions that may compromise the product and framework. Aside from this, regardless of whether the framework is contaminated then the innovation can give cures inside a couple of moments (Vasilakos et al. 2015, p.10). These points of interest furnish associations with appropriate help and counteraction procedures that help to wipe out any dangers of an infection. In any case, the dangers that are included in light of this incorporate the utilization of refreshed programming (Carroll, 2014, p.90). An association receiving the utilization of this product needs to guarantee that the framework in which they are introducing the innovation is refreshed and can possibly introduce the product. The high upkeep of the product makes it a hazard factor for the associations executing the utilization of the innovation. The use of this method in the a ssociation gave for the situation study can help in the assurance of the framework. The programmed recognition of dangers is a hu

The Best Books Book That Rioters Read in May 2017
The Best Books Book That Rioters Read in May 2017 Every month, we ask Riot contributors to share their favorite reads from the last 30 days. These picks are old and new and yet-to-be-released, and span all genres, so thereâs something for everyone! Take a look: The Book of Joan by Lidia Yuknavitch Yuknavitchâs novel is an ultra-feminist, gender-bending acid trip. Her Joan is the hero of our speculative future. This book falls under the category of Dystopian fiction, but Iâm not so sure. It was written before our current president was elected, and its antagonist is a psychotic celebrity named Jean de Man. Sound eerily familiar? If The Handmaidâs Tale is an enraged scream, The Book of Joan is a tortured howl. The crimes against women in this imagined future are horrifying beyond belief. Admittedly, I was a little triggered by its content, but I was living for the horror, Sci-Fi, and feminist hybrid. This is Joan (of arc) like youâve never seen her before. She defies gender. She defies the limits of time and space. She is a mothereffing sorceress. Jan Rosenberg The Book of Mormon Girl: A Memoir of an American Faith by Joanna Brooks Iâve read numerous narratives written by women who fled Mormonism after years of spiritual abuse, but Brooks followed a different path, refusing to give up her heritage even while she insisted on defying the church politically, emotionally, and sexually. Her warts-and-all recollections of the human side of growing up among devout Mormons present a sympathetic picture, showcasing the best elements of belonging to a tight-knit community, along with the fear of reprisals for transgression and the pain of alienation. With the threat of excommunication hanging always over her head, Brooks embraces feminist thought, works to promote marriage equality, and seeks evidence to contradict the racist and sexist assumptions of her religion; she strives to teach her children the beautiful values of their pioneer ancestors while protecting them from the oppressive ideals that cast their shadows over her own life. Monica Friedman Embrace on Brooklyn Bridge by Ezzedine Choukri Fishere, trans. John Peate This novel was shortlisted for the International Prize for Arabic Fiction way back in 2012, and now itâs finally out in a sharp, (darkly) funny translation from John Peate. A novel told in eight stories as people head to a birthday party of a girl who wonât be there, hosted by a man most of them donât like (and for good reason), itâs a story of the missed connections, failed relationships, and dropped calls of Arabs in America. It also has the first 9/11-sympathizer character that I really believe. Marcia Lynx Qualey Evicted: Poverty and Profit in the American City by Matthew Desmond This book won the Pulitzer, and the National Book Critics Circle Award, and I can absolutely see why. Author Matthew Desmond spent months living in a trailer park and then an inner-city rooming house in Milwaukee, getting to know the renters and their landlords and observing firsthand what the housing crisis looks like. By telling these stories, he shows how hard it is for the poor to find and keep decent, affordable housing. This book frequently infuriated me, but it also raised in me a strong sense of compassion for people who are struggling and a desire to look for opportunities to help and advocate for fairer housing policies. Itâs an important book. -Teresa Preston Exit West by Mohsin Hamid Wow. This is such an amazing book, and despite it being set in a near future, itâs completely current. In fall-into-prose, Hamid tells a love story between two refugees, where doors offer escape from their war-torn country. I love how so many authors are using fabulism in their novels recently, and Hamidâs fabulistic doors offer a unique look into the sudden-ness of being forced to leave home. Exit West is such a bittersweet, human story. I recommend reading it in 1-2 sittings; its so easy to become swept up in the prose. Despite the war, loss, and grief the characters experience, its still a hopeful read. It makes me think that maybe the world can be a better place; that we can learn to all be human together. I anticipate giving this to many friends this year. Go read it! Margaret Kingsbury The Fifth Season by N.K. Jemisin I know Iâm a little late with this one, but holy crap this was an incredible book. It is definitely my favorite Jemisin so far. I have a list in my head of the people dead or alive that I would like to have at my dream dinner party (other guests include Octavia Butler and Samuel Delany) and N.K. Jemisin is for sure on the list now. The Fifth Season is an incredibly unique, inventive fantasy with a cast of complex, fascinating characters (human and sort-of-human). Also, surprise! Significant characters include a trans woman and a bisexual man. People of color are also front and center. I cannot WAIT to read the next book. Casey Stepaniuk Flame in the Mist by Renee Ahdieh Iâve been on a solid run of fantastic books so it was really hard to choose only one this month. I was hooked by the excellent formula of: girl disguised as a boy + magic + feudal Japan + complicated family dynamics. But then thereâs the execution, which is just excellent. I was entirely entranced. I listened to the audiobook, which is narrated by Nancy Wu, who voiced the Eon audiobooks, and I really enjoy her narration. (audiobook ARC courtesy of Penguin Random House) -Sarah Nicolas The Girls by Emma Cline You might justifiably be tired of all the Girl-titled recent pop culture (âGirlbossâ is a painful neologism), but The Girls is brilliant and arresting. It describes, in ferocious emotional detail, what makes a Charles Manson-like cult appealing to disaffected girls. Itâs narrated by a teenager discovering that all her life sheâs been sold a false bill of goods when it comes to her own value. For instance, she realizes, âAll that time I had spent readying myself, the articles that taught me life was really just a waiting room until someone noticed youâ"the boys had spent that time becoming themselves.â The irony, of course, is that the form of rebellion she seeks out is equally male-dominatedâ"violently so. Hereâs another quote from the book that may resonate with any woman whoâs wondered why she feels uncomfortable when a male acquaintance warns her so vehemently to be cautious around other men: âwhen men warn you to be careful, often they are warning you of the d ark movie playing across their own brains.â Christine Ro Girl Out of Water by Laura Silverman Anise is a surfing-obsessed California girl, forced to leave her home by the beach for a summer taking care of her little cousins in the middle of the country. Her transformation as a character and the relationships she makes, breaks, and mends are fascinating to watch unfold in this YA novel. With vivid setting descriptions, a complicated family backstory, and a very swoon-worthy black boy love interest, I completely fell for Anise and her story while reading Laura Silvermanâs debut. Promotional materials recommend this book to fans of Jenny Han and Sarah Dessen, and I certainly agree! Alison Doherty Heroine Worship by Sarah Kuhn Heroine Worship isnât an easy book to write about, because it means so much for an audience that doesnât see itself much in literature: young Asian women who might be looking for representation but so rarely get it in mainstream books. In Heroine Complex, she introduces best friends Evie Tanaka and Aveda Jupiter, living millennial lives in San Francisco while fighting off demons trying to take over their city. In Heroine Worship, we return to Evie and Avedaâs life through the eyes of Annie Chang, Avedaâs real identity, but Kuhn doesnât rehash old tricks. Annie is selfish, and overly dramatic, and more than most people can handle, and she is so very very relatable. In Annie, Sarah Kuhn writes a reminder to women like us who feel too much, who do too much, who want so much, and who have no idea how to manage all of those things at once. She is richly drawn and explored, and given agency to be all that she is, even if some of it isnât pleasant to look at. Itâs a perspectiv e we donât get to see very often from Asian women, and Sarah Kuhnâs work grapples with it alongside us, comforting even as it pushes past our expectations. Angel Cruz The Hike by Drew Magary Ben is a middle class businessman on his way to a meeting in rural Pennsylvania when he decides to take a hike in the woods behind his hotel. To say that this will become the weirdest, most frightening hike of Benâs existence is a gross understatement. Along the way, Ben encounters murderous half human/half Doberman creatures, a six-foot-tall cricket, a sarcastic foul-mouthed crab, a 30-foot giantess who makes humans fight for sport, smoke creatures, a Spanish conquistador, and flesh zombies in the darkest Alice-in-Wonderland-esque epic odyssey ever written. I donât usually gravitate towards weird fiction, but I was completely speechless by the time I finished. I canât adequately describe this book except to say itâs weird and wonderful and horrifying and emotional and absolutely bonkers, and Iâm still recovering from the reading hangover. Katie McLain The Hunting Gun by Yasushi Inoue, translated by Michael Emmerich This short, Japanese novella is the story of an affair told through three letters penned by the three women involved the mistress, her daughter and the betrayed wife. Inoue uses an interesting (if artificial feeling) framing device. He opens the book in the first person, explaining how a poem he composed about a solitary hunter, once glimpsed on a path leading into the woods, came to be published in a friendâs hunting magazine. After its publication he is sent the three letters, collected here, by a man claiming to be the hunter who isnpired the poem. Yet, despite how the story is framed, at its heart it is about the complicated relationships of the three women to each other. The intimate revelations from each make surprisingly satisfying (and quick) reading. Tara Cheesman I Am Not Your Perfect Mexican Daughter by Erika L. Sanchez (Knopf, October) When Olga is hit and killed by a semi, Julia mourns the loss of not just her sister, but what it might mean for what her life will look like down the road. Olga was quiet, stayed at home, and played the role of âgood Mexican daughter.â Julia wants out she wants more to her life than her Chicago neighborhood or living at home forever like her sister did. Sheâs a poet and an art lover and wants to make a life out of writing. Through the process of learning to live without Olga, Julia slowly begins to better understand why her parents, both immigrants, are the way that they are. More, Julia begins to unravel the deep secrets that her sister kept. And itâs during a trip to Mexico to visit family that Julia begins to learn how much her parents sacrificed for her and Olga, as well as how much she has to step up and take control of her own life and future. That itâs OKAY for her not to be someone she isnât. This well-drawn debut YA novel from Sanchez should delight readers who loved Gabi, A Girl in Pieces. Also, a moment to drool over that cover! Kelly Jensen Imagine Wanting Only This by Kristen Radtke (Pantheon Books) A gorgeous graphic memoir about life, loss, architecture, ruins, history, and humans. When her uncle dies, Kristen Radtke sees a deserted city and becomes obsessed. She journeys across the globe looking for places that people came, saw, conquered, and left behind. Life is impermanent. Our footprints are only around for a little while. Imagine Wanting Only This is the tale of those places. Ashley Holstrom Katherine of Aragon by Alison Weir TUDOR ENGLAND, who doesnât love it. Alison Weir is embarking on an ambitious project here, to write detailed novels about each of Henry VIIIâs storied wives (how sheâs going to do super-boring Jane Seymour, I do not know). Iâve had a special place in my heart for Katherine of Aragon since The Tudors, and Katherine of Aragon goes it from her excellent point of view. It could be easy to make her seem overly pious and kind of lame, but this is the daughter of ISABELLA OF CASTILE, and she is damn fascinating. Henry and Katherine were married by far the longest out of any of his wives, and this book gives you a blow by blow of their marriage without sinking into tedium. And Anne Boleyn is now out! Get it. Read it. Love it. If you like historical fiction. If not, then maybe do not do that. Alice Burton The Light We Lost by Jill Santopolo As soon as I saw this book mentioned on Stylist.co.uk and compared to One Day, I leapt onto Netgalley to beg for an advance copy, which the good people at Penguin Random House granted me immediately. I knew Iâd love it, and I was right: itâs a novel that explores that age-old dilemma of steady, comfortable, dependable, good-enough love, versus the explosive, amazing, once-in-a-lifetime love that breaks your heart. Claire Handscombe The Lost Book of the Grail by Charlie Lovett If you love books about books, you HAVE to read this novel. Arthur Prescott is a bibliophile and luddite who should rightfully be teaching at Oxford. Instead, heâs at a small uni in Barchester, England, carrying out research in his beloved Barchester Cathedral Library. His monk-like existence is turned topsy turvy when an Instagramming American named Bethany Davis shows up to digitize the libraryâs medieval manuscripts. There is sooo much to love about this book. The Cathedral Library, for example, reminded me of the Bolton Library in Cashel, Ireland, my favoritest library ever; and as a former academic, I found the portrait Lovett painted of university life to be spot-on and hilarious. All the scenes relating to the âMedia Centerâ were particularly brilliant. I even enjoyed the things that usually annoy me: the slow beginning would normally be a deal breaker, but it served to contrast the pace of Arthurâs life before and after the arrival of Bethany. This book is pure fun, but also smart, with awesome characters and a perfectly paced literary mystery. Itâs basically everything I could ever want in a novel. Tasha Brandstatter Material Girl, Mystical World: The Now Age Guide to a High-Vibe Life by Ruby Warrington (Harper Elixir) I normally wouldnt pick up a book like this but something about the confluence of fashion and dharma and tarot and daily life captured my attention. Its peppered with hashtags and fun anecdotes, while managing to be spiritual without being flaky. Its a bit irreverent, which perhaps is its key to success. Its definitely a book Ill be returning to more than once. And can we just talk about the bright pink cover? Love. Jaime Herndon Matylda, Bright and Tender by Holly M. McGhee This is a beautiful middle grade story about best friends, Sussy and Guy, fourth graders who do everything together. They end getting a spotted lizard, name her Matylda, and make up a warrior origin story for her. Shortly after, an accident changes their lives, and Sussy decides she must love Matylda so deeply and care for her so perfectly in order to hold onto Guy and his memory. This story was so incredibly touching and beautiful, and Sussyâs journey through her grief moved at just the right pace. Side note: I cried through most of this book. Karina Glaser No One Can Pronounce My Name by Rakesh Satyal Books about immigrant communities can be so dour and serious, and itâs not that nothing sad or hard happens in this book. But I would dare to use the word âjauntyâ to describe it (there is even a roadtrip with a very unlikely band of misfit types). I mostly loved how gentle and compassionate it was towards its characters, how wise and kind a reading experience it was. If it were a tv show it would be a binge-able one-hour dramedy with wickedly smart writing where you and your friends all love and hate the same characters. Jessica Woodbury The New Jim Crow: Mass Incarceration in the Age of Colorblindness by Michelle Alexander This book changed the way I see the prison industrial complex by drawing links between public policy, primarily the âWar on Drugs,â the egregiously high rates of incarceration and the ongoing struggle for racial equality in the US. While this is not a light book by any meansin discussing the history of race and class struggles in America, how could it be?reading it helped me understand how and why inequality continues to be an issue in modern society, even though and perhaps sometimes because of many institutionsâ will to be âcolorblind.â Rebecca Renner The New Odyssey by Patrick Kingsley In The New Odyssey, the Guardianâs first migration correspondent offers a panoramic view of the European refugee crisis. In the course of researching this book he traveled to seventeen countries and spoke with refugees, smugglers, coast guard officials, and ordinary citizens providing aid to migrants in need. Instead of focusing on Syrian refugees alone, Kingsley also looks at the vast numbers of refugees coming from countries like Afghanistan, Eritrea, and Somalia. Thought-provoking and moving in equal measure, this is the first book I would recommend to someone who wants to learn more about the refugee crisis. Kate Scott Null States by Malka Older (Tor.com, September 19) You can breathe that sigh of relief youâve been holding: this follow-up to Infomocracy is just as delightful and interesting as the original. Indeed, Null States retains the charms of its predecessor (a fascinating concept, a thrilling pace, a richly imagined political fantasy, etc.) without being just a dull extension of it. So we get to see what microdemocracy looks like in new places (e.g., a just-barely-post-dictator Darfur) and under new threats (e.g., wars with holdout nation-states or the threatened withdrawal of a major world government). And Older has gotten even better at balancing the specificities of particular people and places with the big-picture political science that shapes the books. Basically, if you loved Infomocracy, get ready to love Null States. And if you havenât yet gotten around to Infomocracy, do yourself a favor and get on it before September. -Derek Attig The Prey of Gods by Nicky Drayden (Harper Voyager, June 13) In future South Africa, thereâs a demigoddess. Not a powerful demigoddess, but a washed-up demigoddess: Sydney has lost all her magic and now works in a salon doing nails, but she has a plan to regain her original status: kill lots of people for their blood. (That always works for me.) Hoping to keep Sydney from achieving her goal is a pop diva, a queer teen with powers, a politician, and a young Zulu girl who has also recently discovered she has a little magic in her. Now add robots, genetic engineering, hallucinogens, and the weirdest interspecies coupling since Roger and Jessica Rabbit, and youâve got yourself a fantastic tale! This book is so much fun and full of so much weirdness, it makes me cackle with joy. Liberty Hardy Radiate by C. A. Higgins Iâve been with C. A. Higgins for a while. Since her very first book, in fact. This is her third, the last in a trilogy, and it ends in both an incredibly satisfying way, and, as the best books do (as far as Iâm concerned) it leaves me wanting more. Radiate picks up where the last book left off, returning us into the middle of the political and dramatic conflict of our own universe but far in the future, where weâve colonized all the planets in the solar system and many of its moons. We learn what happens to the sentient ship flying through space and to the single human who remains on board. We learn what happens to Ivan and Mattie, reunited at last and fighting to save the woman they have both loved in very different ways. We learn what has happened to the rebellion against the system. And, on top of all that, we learn about a whole bunch of moments in the past that weâve been wondering about during books one and two. And all this in a volume less than 350 pages long. Higgins is a masterful writer. Ilana Masad A Rising Man (Sam Wyndham #1) by Abir Mukherjee I love a great mystery. Add great characters that I want to read a whole series of and a setting as important as the main character and Iâm in love. Set in 1919 British ruled Calcutta A Rising Man introduces us to Sam Wyndham, a former Scotland Yard detective, who is tasked with solving the murder of a British official. Heâs a bit out of his depth considering heâs in a new place, his opium addiction has traveled with him, and he does not understand the many rules/laws against Indians. Enter terrorist suspects, brothels, opium dens, a crush, and an interesting look at early 1900s Calcutta and this had all the ingredients for a super satisfying detective novel. If youâre a fan of mysteries you donât want to miss this one! Jamie Canaves A Study in Charlotte by Brittany Cavallaro I listened to this on audio after a good friend said she needed me to jump into this series so she could rant with me about the feels, and oh my gosh, Iâm so glad I did. I especially like that the Holmes character, Charlotte, is a teenage girl in this rendition. A great, plot driven novel with a touch of romance was exactly what I was looking for to kick off my summer, and this book delivered. -Amanda Kay Oaks Trust Me by Farrah Rochon If youâd told me a month ago that Iâd have any interest in reading a novel right now that included political corruption as a major theme, I would have â" to put it mildly â" disagreed with you. And yet, I was hooked by Farrah Rochonâs New Orleans political-scene romance Trust Me, within the first few pages. More accurately, I was hooked by Mackenna Arnold, the city council member heroine of her story, and how relatable she was. Mack both loves her job and is frustrated by it. Sheâs fighting battles on multiple fronts despite knowing sheâs not going to win them all. Sheâs the kind of character I want to sit and drink scotch with at happy hour. Trust Me is a great romance, but it also made me wish Mack was real and could run for something other than fictional mayor of New Orleans. I may not have any higher or more unusual praise for a fictional character right now than wishing real political office upon her. â" Trisha Brown The Whiskey of Our Discontent: Gwendolyn Brooks as Conscience and Change Agent edited by Quraysh Ali Lansana and Georgia A. Popoff (June 6, Haymarket Books) June 7, 2017 marks the official centennial of the birth of Gwendolyn Brooks. This collection of critical and creative essays examines Brooksâs profound influence over the past hundred years, and considers her legacy not only as a poet, but also as one of our most important and enduring American educators and activists. Her writing about race, gender, and social inequality is integral to the American literary canon. Furthermore, these essays highlight Brooksâs selflessness as a tireless mentor and literary citizen. Each essay is loaded with gorgeous writing, and together they demonstrate that Gwendolyn Brooks will always be remembered for so much more than poems found in anthologies. -Aram Mrjoian Wild by Hannah Moskowitz Wild follows Zach, a Filipino-American runner whose mother suffers from Alzheimers. When he discovers that his girlfriend Jordan â" who he met on the internet â" is Deaf, Zach is exposed to a different world. Both Zach and Jordan have to deal with what being in a Deaf/hearing relationship might mean for them. Wild manages to be a lighthearted romance, which is both funny and clever. It heavily features sign language, which is not something you often find in books â" or elsewhere â" and was pretty refreshing to read. Adiba Jaigirdar Wishbones by Virginia MacGregor (HQ, May 23rd 2017) This story reminded me why I love to read YA. Priya Sridhar The Wrath the Dawn by Renee Ahdieh Lately Iâve really been into reading retellings of fairytales and folktales. I wasnât familiar with the story of Arabian Nights, so I went into this pretty blind, but I was hooked immediately. The writing is beautiful. The characters are diverse. The world that Ahdieh builds is detailed and well-developed. The love story melted my heart. And even though I have a To-Read pile thatâs easily 2-feet high, I just had to run out to Barnes and Noble the next day to get the sequel. Kate Krug

Essay about Substance Abuse and Effects On The Human Brain
Introduction Substance Abuse is a major contemporary issue we face as a society; affecting not only adults, but our youth as well. Statistics have shown that more and more adolescents are being introduced to substances at a much earlier age than before. In fact, most users began using in their teenage years, with half of those starting off with Marijuana. A survey taken in 2011 by the Subtance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, showed that an estimated 22.5 million Americans 12 and older had used an illicit drug or abused a psychotherapeutic medication within the month the survey was taken; with Marijuana being among the most used substances(Drugfacts: Nationwide Trends 2012). Alcohol being amongst the earliest subtances used, dates back to 4000 B.C; coca was also used in 3000 B.C by ancient Incas to raise their heart rate and to speed breathing due to the high altitude mountain climate(Wilhite 2013). Marijuana use can also be traced back as early as 3000 B.C in China. The use of halluncinogenic mushrooms go back as far as 5,000 B.C;used for religious purposes(Erowid 2011). Even the Aztecs were very fond of hallucinatory drugs such as mushrooms, morning glory seeds, Salvia divinorum, Datura, and Peyote; which were used in rituals and ceremonies. This illustrates a long period of time that our ancestors used and abused substances. string(95) " You guys must need to get a little crazy too to handle all the stuff youââ¬â¢ve been doing\." Min, Dougââ¬â¢s saxophonist, rummaged through the array of liquor bottles on Wyattââ¬â¢s counter. ââ¬Å"I donââ¬â¢t think he has any,â⬠he finally said. ââ¬Å"Can you make a gimlet without lime juice?â⬠ââ¬Å"Um, no,â⬠I replied. We will write a custom essay sample on Succubus on Top CHAPTER 13 or any similar topic only for you Order Now ââ¬Å"That kind of defeats the whole purpose. ââ¬Å" ââ¬Å"Oh. Okay. Well, then, you just want a shot or something?â⬠He held up a bottle of ââ¬â God help me ââ¬â Skyy vodka. ââ¬Å"I think Iââ¬â¢ll pass.â⬠I surveyed the humming, thumping party around me. Tons of people had showed up as usual; I doubted the band even knew half of them. The wages of fame, I guessed. Also as usual, there were drugs and drinks aplenty for those who wanted such things ââ¬â as long as oneââ¬â¢s vices didnââ¬â¢t stray to lime juice, apparently. I turned back to Min. ââ¬Å"You seen Alec tonight?â⬠ââ¬Å"Nope. Said heââ¬â¢d be here. I hope he shows soon.â⬠Min shifted restlessly, and I wondered just how many people Alec was stringing along. The whole band, after all, had displayed that crazy, uncaring behavior. Iââ¬â¢d spent most of the day planning for tonight, trying to figure out what it would take to get information and possibly the drug itself from Alec. Finally, as the party drew nearer, I accepted that I was overthinking the matter. Alec was hardly a criminal mastermind. If I wanted something from him, it was a safe bet that the removal of clothing and an orifice would suffice. With that in mind, Iââ¬â¢d dressed for the part in another little dress. Like the one Iââ¬â¢d worn to the last concert, this too had a V-neck, straps, and short skirt. Unlike that one ââ¬â which had been cotton and more like a sundress ââ¬â this one was silk and looked kind of like a nightgown. Its rich, emerald green mirrored the green flecks in my eyes. Iââ¬â¢d made sure of that, enhancing the color in both. ââ¬Å"Finally,â⬠I muttered to myself, catching sight of Alecââ¬â¢s blue-streaked hair across the crowd. He saw me, and I waved, making him grin smugly at my acknowledgment. ââ¬Å"Hey,â⬠he said, looking me over. ââ¬Å"Wow.â⬠ââ¬Å"About time you showed,â⬠berated Min, handing over a beer. They greeted each other with some kind of weird, shoulder-punching guy thing. Then Min held up a bottle of Tropical Soiree Key Lime Schnapps. ââ¬Å"Hey, look what I found. Will this work?â⬠ââ¬Å"Sure. Whatever,â⬠I said. I wanted to start working Alec, putting him at ease. If it involved some unholy drink concoction, then Iââ¬â¢d have to take that risk. Min handed me a plastic cup filled with bright green liquid, and Alec and I wandered off to mingle. ââ¬Å"Youââ¬â¢re letting Min experiment on you?â⬠he asked, pointing at the cup. Inspiration hit. ââ¬Å"Heââ¬â¢s been experimenting on me all night.â⬠I laughed, a bit too loudly and held on to his arm. Alec didnââ¬â¢t need to know this was my first drink. ââ¬Å"But none of the other stuff he made looked this bad.â⬠He smiled and casually placed his arm around my waist. ââ¬Å"Have I told you how great you look?â⬠ââ¬Å"Yeah, I kind of got the message,â⬠I told him. Sniffing the cup, I detected nothing but sugar. Tentatively, I brought the cup to my lips and tasted. Bleh. It was like Kool-Aid and mouthwash. Fortunately, I donââ¬â¢t have much of a gag reflex, so I managed to swallow without choking. Alec flattered me a little more, and then I steered him toward the one topic guaranteed to captivate him: himself. It worked. Within a few minutes, I discovered that subject area was even more limited than Iââ¬â¢d suspected. He only wanted to talk about the band. ââ¬Å"So yeah, we figure we should start expanding out of Seattle and hit some of the other big cities in the area. You know, like Portland and Vancouver. If we can start getting a following in the Northwest, we can hit the rest of the west coast, you know? And Coreyââ¬â¢s dad knows this guy who knows someone at a record company, and heââ¬â¢s going to send him the review that was in the SeattleTimesâ⬠¦ ââ¬Å" I let him go on, nodding my head and saying ââ¬Å"uh-huhâ⬠a lot. I should point out that I really was interested in Nocturnal Admissionââ¬â¢s success. I believed in them and their talent. Just not tonight. Other things demanded my attention. ââ¬Å"You know,â⬠he suddenly said out of nowhere, ââ¬Å"I didnââ¬â¢t think you really liked me.â⬠Yeah. Good observation. I smiled. ââ¬Å"Sorry about that. There are so many jerks out there that I come off a little bitchy at first, until I know a guy. But the rest of the band swears by you, and I trust them. Besidesâ⬠ââ¬â I leaned closer, lowering my voice to a sultry purr ââ¬â ââ¬Å"I know you now, and I definitely like you now.â⬠To my astonishment, Alec broke away from me. How unexpected was that? Weirder still was that I saw interest in his eyes but only his eyes. The rest of him was plainly distressed about something. My surprise must have been reflected in my expression, because a moment later, he laughed like nothing had happened and returned the hand to my waist. ââ¬Å"I wouldnââ¬â¢t really trust the guys on much, but hey, if theyââ¬â¢ve convinced you, whatever.â⬠I turned the smile back on, pretending I hadnââ¬â¢t noticed the weird reaction. We started talking again, and I continued to let him dictate the parameters of our conversation. When he brought up skateboarding and the benefits of one board brand over another, I decided Doug didnââ¬â¢t appreciate the extent of my love for him. Slightly bored, I leaned into Alec and drank from the cup without thinking about it. ââ¬Å"Son of a bitch!â⬠I swore, tasting that mess again. ââ¬Å"What?â⬠ââ¬Å"This.â⬠I set the cup down on a rickety coffee table, sloshing the green liquid. ââ¬Å"Itââ¬â¢s terrible.â⬠I realized this was my opening. ââ¬Å"God, Iââ¬â¢ve had such a fucked-up week.â⬠I turned so that I stood even closer, resting a hand on his back, sliding it down to his waist. ââ¬Å"Iââ¬â¢m glad you had this party. I grinned at him. ââ¬Å"I like to play too.â⬠Like before, the look in his eyes said he did want to play ââ¬â especially if we played doctor. But his body language didnââ¬â¢t match it. He was holding himself back for some reason, which didnââ¬â¢t fit with my image of him as a womanizing drug lord. But he kept smiling, even if the rest of him was stiff. ââ¬Å"How do you like to play?â⬠ââ¬Å"Not with that.â⬠I pointed at the jettisoned cup and looked back up at him with doe eyes, both innocent and provocative. I tried to recall the stupid expression heââ¬â¢d used at the first party. ââ¬Å"You maybe got anythingâ⬠¦harder?â⬠A pleased and ââ¬â unless I was mistaken ââ¬â relieved smile danced on his face. ââ¬Å"Maybe I do.â⬠I punched him lightly, then snaked my arm around his neck. ââ¬Å"I know you do. Whereas meâ⬠¦well, I always shareâ⬠¦Ã¢â¬ He still didnââ¬â¢t take the physical bait or go for my over-the-top vixen lines, but the rest had piqued his interest. ââ¬Å"Iââ¬â¢ve got something,â⬠he said, glancing around carefully. ââ¬Å"Letââ¬â¢s go talk in the bedroom. ââ¬Å" Ah. Now we were getting somewhere. I followed him back to Wyattââ¬â¢s small messy bedroom which miraculously wasnââ¬â¢t occupied yet. I sat on the unmade bed, crossing my legs, keeping my body language as open and relaxed as possible. ââ¬Å"Are we going to play now?â⬠He answered with a question of his own: ââ¬Å"You sure you can handle the hard stuff?â⬠I arched an eyebrow. ââ¬Å"Baby, I can take it as hard as you can give it. ââ¬Å" Reaching into his coat pocket, he sat down on the bed beside me and held up a tiny plastic bag, much smaller than the bag Reese kept his pot in. In the poor lighting, I could discern tiny glittering crystals. Almost like red sugar. ââ¬Å"This,â⬠he said in a low voice, ââ¬Å"is what youââ¬â¢ve been waiting for your whole life. This is the stuff thatââ¬â¢s going to change your world. Make you who you were born to be.â⬠I was rendered speechless, but not from his melodramatic prologue. It was the crystals. This close to them, Iâ⬠¦well, felt them. They had an aura, almost the same way an immortal has a signature. Only this wasnââ¬â¢t exactly a pleasant aura. The crystals felt strange to me. They sent little Shockwaves into the air. They made my skin crawl. And weirdest of all, Iââ¬â¢d felt them before. Once with Doug, once with the band. I hoped Alec would interpret my frown as cute confusion. ââ¬Å"What is that?â⬠A sly smile spread over his face. ââ¬Å"A magic potion, Georgina.â⬠I smiled back, not having to feign puzzlement. ââ¬Å"I donââ¬â¢t believe in magic.â⬠ââ¬Å"Oh, you will after this.â⬠He pressed the bag into my palm, and I squelched a sharp cry. I didnââ¬â¢t like touching the crystals. ââ¬Å"Go grab something to drink and put them in it. Mix it all up and then drink ââ¬â preferably as fast as you can. Youââ¬â¢ll get the effects sooner.â⬠ââ¬Å"Whatââ¬â¢ll they do?â⬠ââ¬Å"Something good. Something youââ¬â¢ll like.â⬠He ran his hand through the strands of my hair. ââ¬Å"Man, I canââ¬â¢t wait to see how you react to them.â⬠How I reacted? I didnââ¬â¢t like the sound of that. Maybe I wasnââ¬â¢t getting the same thing as Doug after all. Maybe I was getting the date-rape drug. Of course, with as inviting as I was trying to be, he had to realize those kinds of extremes werenââ¬â¢t necessary. I pushed the unease out of my head. ââ¬Å"What do I owe you for these?â⬠The smoke in my voice clearly told him how Iââ¬â¢d like him to extract payment. ââ¬Å"Nothing. Itââ¬â¢s a gift.â⬠ââ¬Å"Nothing?â⬠I trailed my hand across his leg. Believe me, I really didnââ¬â¢t want to sleep with this guy, but I wanted to stay in his good graces to figure out what the hell this stuff was. And yeah, okay, I sort of wanted to see him suffer from the energy loss. ââ¬Å"Are you sure?â⬠I slid my body closer to his, gently pushing him back on the bed. His eyes widened as I lay down next to him, brushing my lips over his neck. Turning his face toward mine, I moved my lips closer to his, lightly kissing the area just by his mouth. ââ¬Å"Are you really sure?â⬠I asked, voice lower. His breathing grew heavy, and he stroked my side, tracing the shape of my hip and moving down to my bare leg. Looking half-terrified, he moistened his lips in anticipation. My tongue snaked up to them, dancing around their edges before gently probing inside. He stifled a moan and then pushed me aside. ââ¬Å"Noâ⬠¦Iâ⬠¦no. No.â⬠He sat up, shaking. ââ¬Å"Not yet.â⬠I sat up as well, moving in one fluid and graceful motion. Tossing my hair over one shoulder, I gave him a languid smile. ââ¬Å"Come on, I want to.â⬠ââ¬Å"I canââ¬â¢tâ⬠¦but maybe, well maybe later we can work something out.â⬠Both longing and reluctance showed in his expression, which I found relieving. Nice to know my charms were still working and he wasnââ¬â¢t all business after all. Maybe this was just a first-oneââ¬â¢s-free type of deal, and heââ¬â¢d be more thorough in his demands later. Fine by me. It wasnââ¬â¢t the end of the world if I didnââ¬â¢t sleep with him, and hopefully we wouldnââ¬â¢t even need the second batch. ââ¬Å"Here.â⬠Having seized control of himself, Alec held out his beer to me. ââ¬Å"Huh?â⬠ââ¬Å"Go ahead and try them. You can mix them in this.â⬠I looked down at the sparkling red granules. They almost had a light of their own. That weird sensation pulsed out at me, grating my immortal senses. No way was I going to ingest the contents of this bag. I shook my head. ââ¬Å"I canââ¬â¢t right now. Iââ¬â¢ve got to go to another party. I promised a friend. Iââ¬â¢ll try them later, okay?â⬠He didnââ¬â¢t look happy about that. ââ¬Å"I wanted you to try it now.â⬠ââ¬Å"Whatââ¬â¢s wrong with later?â⬠ââ¬Å"Nothing I guessâ⬠¦just, look, donââ¬â¢t let anyone else know, okay? I donââ¬â¢t have a lot of this stuff. If word gets out, everyoneââ¬â¢ll want some. Right now Iââ¬â¢m only letting special people try it.â⬠ââ¬Å"Am I special?â⬠I teased. Alec gave me a long, searching look, blatantly studying my face and the way the silk fit me. Again, the appreciation and attraction shone in his eyes, but he held himself back from my smile of invitation. ââ¬Å"Very special.â⬠I managed to extract myself from the party shortly thereafter but not before Alec had warned me again to keep the crystals to myself. He also urged me to let him know how I liked them. ââ¬Å"The second dose is even better,â⬠he promised. Finally escaping, I breathed a sigh of relief, alone in the cool night air. As I walked to my car, I shoved the crystals into my purse, still creeped out by how they felt. They were supernatural; that much was obvious. I knew I had to get them to someone who could identify them. That, however, would have to wait a little longer since I was already past when Iââ¬â¢d said Iââ¬â¢d call Seth. Happily, I discovered I could no longer sense the packet once it was encased in the fabric. That was something, at least. ââ¬Å"Where are you at?â⬠I asked Seth when he answered his cell phone. ââ¬Å"Terry and Andreaââ¬â¢s. You want to come over?â⬠Spending the evening with his family sounded refreshingly ordinary after the sleaze and debauchery of Alec and that party. In fact, compared to everything else weird in my life at the moment, it sounded downright wonderful. Identical blonde faces greeted me at the door when I arrived, both sets of lips forming a perfect ââ¬Ëoââ¬â¢ when they saw me. A moment later, Brandy appeared behind her little twin sisters. ââ¬Å"Oh, Georgina, that dress is so pretty.â⬠She pushed Morgan and McKenna out of the way, both still starstruck. I stepped inside the Mortensen home and found complete chaos. Sheets of clear plastic lay everywhere. Masking tape covered the wall trim. Most of the furniture had been pushed out of the living room, shoved into a pile in the hallway beyond. Those items remaining were wrapped in thick cocoons of more plastic sheeting. Paint buckets, trays, and brushes littered most of the free space, and everything ââ¬â the people included ââ¬â was splattered with yellow paint. ââ¬Å"Georgina!â⬠squealed eight-year old Kendall, tearing toward me. Her mother, walking into the room, leapt out and tackled her daughter. ââ¬Å"Donââ¬â¢t touch her!â⬠Andrea exclaimed, tumbling to the ground. ââ¬Å"Not in that dress.â⬠I laughed, wanting to sweep up each one of the girls in an enormous hug, the dress be damned. ââ¬Å"Seth,â⬠chastised Terry, standing on top of a ladder, ââ¬Å"why didnââ¬â¢t you tell her this was a war zone?â⬠The Mortensen Brothers always entertained me. Despite being younger, Terry always seemed exasperated by Sethââ¬â¢s scattered behavior and often had to prod him into reality. Seth sat cross-legged on the floor with Kayla, youngest of the Mortensen daughters, on his lap. Like everyone else, he had paint all over him ââ¬â including his Writers Do It at Their Desks shirt. Looking as serene as a Buddhist monk, he flashed me one of his distracted smiles. ââ¬Å"Because itââ¬â¢s always a war zone over here. ââ¬Å" ââ¬Å"Well, get her out of here and take her somewhere nice,â⬠Terry said. ââ¬Å"No need to drag her down into this.â⬠This immediately triggered cries of outrage from the girls. ââ¬Å"I donââ¬â¢t mind staying,â⬠I told them. ââ¬Å"Iââ¬â¢d like to help.â⬠Andrea rose from her tackle, one arm still around Kendall. ââ¬Å"Weââ¬â¢re going to have to cover you up then. Come on, letââ¬â¢s see if Iââ¬â¢ve got anything thatââ¬â¢ll fit.â⬠She released Kendall. The little girl took a step toward me but didnââ¬â¢t touch anything. ââ¬Å"You look like one of the ladies in the Victoriaââ¬â¢s Secret catalog.â⬠ââ¬Å"My favorite reading material,â⬠I told her solemnly. ââ¬Å"Daddyââ¬â¢s too.â⬠Her mother groaned and led me to her bedroom, forcing us to squeeze through the furniture packed hallway. Being in Terry and Andreaââ¬â¢s bedroom was a lot different than being in Danaââ¬â¢s. It was messier for one thing, with an unmade bed and piles of laundry on the floor. The color scheme and decorating were a lot less coordinated too, suggesting it had all been pieced together over the years, not preplanned with a designerââ¬â¢s cold eye. Pictures of the girls at various ages covered the walls and dressers, and free surfaces held odd pieces of jewelry, books, and change. And yet, despite that clutter, the whole room felt filled with love, like the people who occupied it were happy and cared about each other. It made the place warm and cozy, not sterile and sharp as Danaââ¬â¢s had been. It made me feel good to be in here, jealous that I had nothing like it with another person, and almost intrusive to be in such an intimate setting. It was like eavesdropping. ââ¬Å"Ah, here we are,â⬠murmured Andrea, rummaging through drawers. She handed me some clothes. I slipped out of the dress and tried them on. While she had a fantastic body for having birthed five daughters, Andrea was still taller and bigger than me, so the clothes hung loose and long. Changing her mind, she handed me denim overalls instead of the jeans. They had to be rolled up at the cuffs, but the straps kept them on me. I tied my hair in a ponytail and was ready to go. Seth laughed when he saw me. ââ¬Å"Hey,â⬠I said, poking him with my foot, ââ¬Å"be nice.â⬠ââ¬Å"I think this is the first time Iââ¬â¢ve ever seen you look anything less thanâ⬠¦Ã¢â¬ He paused, playing with word choice. ââ¬Å"Well-planned.â⬠ââ¬Å"Why, you silver-tongued romantic devil. That is the look I usually go for. Other women go for sexy or chic or beautiful. But me? Well-planned all the way.â⬠ââ¬Å"You know what I mean. Besides, unplanned isnââ¬â¢t a bad look for you. Not bad at all.â⬠His voice sounded deliciously low and dangerous, and something ignited between us as we held each otherââ¬â¢s eyes. ââ¬Å"You guys can flirt on your own time,â⬠said Terry briskly, handing me a roller and tray of paint. ââ¬Å"Right now, you work for us. Think you can do this part of the wall?â⬠ââ¬Å"Sure.â⬠I glanced over at Seth, whose main job still seemed to be restraining Kayla. ââ¬Å"Why arenââ¬â¢t you painting?â⬠ââ¬Å"Because he isnââ¬â¢t allowed to,â⬠answered Brandy, painting deftly around a doorway. ââ¬Å"Uncle Sethââ¬â¢s a libation,â⬠explained Kendall. ââ¬Å"Liability,â⬠corrected her mother. She grinned at me. ââ¬Å"The odds say you have to be a better painter than him. Correction: the laws of the universe say you have to be.â⬠ââ¬Å"Of course she is. Sheââ¬â¢s good at everything.â⬠Seth watched me apply a smooth, even coat. ââ¬Å"See?â⬠Painting with the Mortensens made for an utterly normal and utterly enjoyable evening. They were so funny and nice that it was hard not to love them. Working side by side, I could almost pretend I was really one of them. Like this could be my own family. They included me in everything and spoke as though Seth and I were a done deal, assuming I would be with them not only for Thanksgiving but also for Christmas and an assortment of other get-togethers. The simple, casually extended affection made me feel happy inside, and sad too. I would never be able to quite fit in with any mortal family, even if this wacky relationship with Seth did ever stabilize. I pushed aside a plastic-covered box and got a peek inside. Moving the sheet further, I smiled down at a framed picture of Terry and Andreaââ¬â¢s wedding party ââ¬â including a much younger Seth. ââ¬Å"Look at you,â⬠I teased. ââ¬Å"You used to shave.â⬠He rubbed the stubble on his lower face. ââ¬Å"I still shave.â⬠ââ¬Å"So this is the infamous occasion Seth almost missed?â⬠ââ¬Å"Yup,â⬠said Terry, a rueful tone in his voice. ââ¬Å"Apparently finishing A Talented Heat was more important than witnessing my nuptials.â⬠ââ¬Å"Oh,â⬠I said neutrally, ââ¬Å"thatââ¬â¢s a really good one.â⬠I wasnââ¬â¢t sure if it was missing-a-wedding good, but it was still one of my favorites. It might have been worth the sacrifice. ââ¬Å"Whoââ¬â¢s the other guy beside you?â⬠ââ¬Å"Our other brother. Ian.â⬠ââ¬Å"Another Mortensen? You guys are abundant.â⬠ââ¬Å"Tell me about it,â⬠said Terry. ââ¬Å"Ianââ¬â¢s the black sheep.â⬠ââ¬Å"I thought I was the black sheep,â⬠said Seth, sounding almost hurt. ââ¬Å"No. Youââ¬â¢re the unfocused artistic one. Iââ¬â¢m the responsible one. Ianââ¬â¢s the wild, hedonistic one.â⬠ââ¬Å"Whatââ¬â¢s hedonistic?â⬠asked Kendall. Her father considered. ââ¬Å"It means you run up a lot of credit card bills you canââ¬â¢t pay, change jobs a lot, and have a lot ofâ⬠¦lady friends.â⬠Brandy rolled her eyes. ââ¬Å"Good euphemism, Dad.â⬠Only in the Mortensen family, I decided delightedly, would a fourteen-year old use a word like ââ¬Å"euphemism.â⬠Andrea walked over to the portrait and admired her younger self. In the picture, she wore a long-sleeved lace dress that left her shoulders bare. ââ¬Å"Ah, those were the days,â⬠she sighed. ââ¬Å"Back before pregnancy ruined my body.â⬠ââ¬Å"Well, that wasnââ¬â¢t entirely before pregnancy,â⬠observed her husband in an undertone. She shot him a dangerous look. Brandy groaned. Seth tried to hide a smile and changed the subject. ââ¬Å"That church had horrible carpet. Burgundy shag.â⬠He shook his head. ââ¬Å"I think Iââ¬â¢m going to get married outdoors.â⬠ââ¬Å"Oh my God,â⬠said Terry with mock horror, ââ¬Å"I canââ¬â¢t believe you just acknowledged you might get married. I thought you were married to your writing.â⬠ââ¬Å"Hey, Iââ¬â¢ve never had a problem with polygamy.â⬠Kendallââ¬â¢s eyes widened. ââ¬Å"Whatââ¬â¢s polygamy?â⬠Later, when weââ¬â¢d finished the living room, Seth and I offered to start cleaning up while Terry and Andrea put the brood to bed. The girls resisted, clinging to Seth and me, wanting us to talk and come back tomorrow. ââ¬Å"My nieces think youââ¬â¢re a rock star,â⬠he observed as we washed brushes in the kitchen. ââ¬Å"I think they like you better than me.â⬠ââ¬Å"Iââ¬â¢m not the one they had to tear Kayla from. Hey, does she ever talk?â⬠ââ¬Å"Sometimes. Usually when thereââ¬â¢s bait involved ââ¬â like candy or small objects she might choke on.â⬠We washed the brushes in silence until I brought up the topic that had been on my mind ever since heââ¬â¢d mentioned it. ââ¬Å"An outdoor wedding, huh?â⬠The notion of Seth getting married held a perverse fascination for me. Fascinating because I was female and attracted to such things. Perverse because I knew I wouldnââ¬â¢t be the bride at such an event. Succubus logistics obviously made that impossible. Then, of course, there was the fact that my mortal marriage had not gone so well. In addition to me cheating and pushing my husband into a debilitating depression, it had later resulted in me selling my soul and joining the ranks of hell. That didnââ¬â¢t make for a good matrimonial track record. Seth cut me a look, eyes amused. ââ¬Å"Yup.â⬠ââ¬Å"I didnââ¬â¢t know guys ever thought about that kind of stuff.â⬠ââ¬Å"Sometimes we do.â⬠ââ¬Å"You got any other details worked out? Or just the outside lovefest part?â⬠He pondered this as we returned to the living room. He wore the intense expression that seized him when he was trying to write a certain line or think of something clever to say. ââ¬Å"I want a good buffet,â⬠he said. ââ¬Å"Not one of those cheap ones with cold cuts. And no bows on the chairs or anything like that. Man, I hate those.â⬠ââ¬Å"Wow. I guess youââ¬â¢ve got it all figured out.â⬠I began pulling masking tape off the trim while he knelt down to gather more brushes. He continued on, still considering. ââ¬Å"And I want my bride to wear open-toed shoes.â⬠ââ¬Å"Why open-toed?â⬠He looked up with astonishment. ââ¬Å"Because toes are sexy.â⬠I looked down at my own bare feet. They were small and cute, each toenail painted a pale lavender. Andrea hadnââ¬â¢t had any shoes my size. I gave him a sly smile. ââ¬Å"Like these toes?â⬠He looked away and returned to his work. Forgetting my masking tape, I strolled over to him, trying not to laugh. ââ¬Å"Why Seth Mortensen, do you have a fetish?â⬠ââ¬Å"Itââ¬â¢s not a fetish,â⬠he replied evenly. ââ¬Å"Just an appreciation.â⬠This time I did laugh. ââ¬Å"Oh yeah?â⬠I moved my foot out to tickle his arm, wiggling the toes. ââ¬Å"You appreciate these toes?â⬠ââ¬Å"I appreciate everything about you ââ¬â even how mean you are.â⬠I crouched beside him and slung an arm around him. ââ¬Å"To think, all this time Iââ¬â¢ve been prancing around you in low-cut shirts and no underwear, in awe of your stalwart resistance, when really it was my toes ââ¬â ââ¬Å" ââ¬Å"No underwear?â⬠he interrupted. ââ¬Å"Wait. Are you wearing any now?â⬠ââ¬Å"My lips are sealed. Youââ¬â¢ll have to find out the old-fashioned way. Iââ¬â¢m not going to talk. ââ¬Å" ââ¬Å"Oh,â⬠he said in a warning voice, ââ¬Å"we have ways of making you talk.â⬠ââ¬Å"Like what?â⬠In one surprisingly quick motion, Seth sprang up and rolled me onto my back. One arm pinned me and the other held a paintbrush over me, wet with paint. ââ¬Å"Hey!â⬠I cried. ââ¬Å"Thatââ¬â¢s not sexy. Thatââ¬â¢s not even cool.â⬠Actually, being pinned to the floor by him was about as sexy as it got. He stabbed it toward me playfully, never actually making contact, but I flinched anyway. ââ¬Å"Whatââ¬â¢s the problem?â⬠he teased. ââ¬Å"You can just shape-shift it away.â⬠ââ¬Å"Oh! Youââ¬â¢re a twisted bastard.â⬠His lips quirked into a wicked smile, and he dabbed the brush at my cheek, leaving a small streak of paint. A second later, he added a matching mark on the other cheek. ââ¬Å"Ready for battle,â⬠he declared. I yelped in dismay, then used his momentary satisfaction to break free and reverse the situation, rolling him over. Now I hovered on top of him, one hand on his chest, the other on his arm. ââ¬Å"Iââ¬â¢m learning more about you every day,â⬠I observed, leaning my face toward his. My hair had come undone from its haphazard ponytail and now hung down, almost creating a curtain around him. ââ¬Å"Youââ¬â¢ve got a real dark side.â⬠ââ¬Å"Is that a problem?â⬠ââ¬Å"Actually I kind of like it.â⬠I lowered my mouth and gave him what we had now dubbed a ââ¬Å"stealth kissâ⬠ââ¬â the kind of semi-deep kiss perfected at the concert that just pushed the envelope of succubus absorption. I pulled up a moment later, my lips still tingling from where weââ¬â¢d touched. He shifted one hand to the small of my back while his other tangled itself up in my hair. A lazy and contented smile played on his face. ââ¬Å"You want to go grab something to eat after this?â⬠ââ¬Å"What do you have in mind?â⬠ââ¬Å"Anything. So long as the company stays this good.â⬠I smiled and leaned down to kiss him again, only this time I had trouble keeping the kiss as stealthy as it should have been. When I should have broken away, I kissed him a little harder instead, letting my tongue probe more boldly into his mouth. Surprisingly, what abruptly stopped this indiscretion was not the twinge of energy transfer, but Seth himself. ââ¬Å"Thetis,â⬠he warned, pushing me away ââ¬â not harshly, but not gently either. I stared, my better judgment suddenly scrambled. I wanted to kiss him again. And again. To hell with the succubus thing. And it wasnââ¬â¢t just because of the chemistry or the physical roughhousing, the comments about my toes and lack of underwear. It was about everything tonight. Pretending I was part of his family. Talking about weddings that could never happen. I was suddenly overcome with emotion. Joy and delight over the way just being around him felt. Knowing he loved me for both my inner and outer selves. A warm contentment that his presence naturally brought on. And, of course, the dark emotions were there too. Anger that our relationship could never be complete. Despair that he was not immortal. Jealousy that I could never be his bride. What had Jerome said? That being with me denied Seth all the normal things in life? Kissing him was a base, anxious reaction to all these emotions I couldnââ¬â¢t otherwise deal with. ââ¬Å"Thetis,â⬠he repeated, studying my face and whatever crazy expression was on it. ââ¬Å"Come on. Youââ¬â¢re stronger than this.â⬠He sounded sad and sympathetic, yet stern and parental too. His words snapped me out of my emotional vortex, suddenly making me feel, well, inadequate compared to him. Terry walked back into the living room, looking rightfully startled to see me on top of his brother. ââ¬Å"Do you guys need to go to bed too?â⬠Seth and I exchanged bitter, amused smiles. ââ¬Å"If only,â⬠I said. Once everything was cleaned up, Seth and I left to find a very late dinner. We stayed quiet, neither of us bringing up what had happened earlier. I think he knew I was taking it harder than he had and wanted to say something to cheer me up. But nothing apparently came to mind, so silence reigned until we returned to Terryââ¬â¢s house to get our respective cars. ââ¬Å"Georgina,â⬠he said suddenly, hesitantly, as we stood by my car. ââ¬Å"I have to know something.â⬠I looked at him wearily, not liking the seriousness in his voice. I really didnââ¬â¢t want to deal with any more weighty issues tonight. I sighed. ââ¬Å"What?â⬠He studied me a moment, apparently assessing my emotional state. ââ¬Å"Soâ⬠¦ areyou wearing any underwear now?â⬠I blinked in astonishment, taken aback. Then I saw how hard he fought to keep a straight expression. It was too funny. Seth was trying to make me feel better, very much in a goofy way I might have attempted. The tight coil of frustration inside of me unwound. ââ¬Å"Yes,â⬠I told him with a smile. ââ¬Å"Oh,â⬠he said, looking relieved to see me relax but disappointed by the answer. ââ¬Å"But you know what the real beauty of shape-shafting is?â⬠ââ¬Å"What?â⬠ââ¬Å"Iââ¬â¢m not anymore.â⬠How to cite Succubus on Top CHAPTER 13, Essay examples
